PR 101 - Getting Past Gatekeepers
I can’t tell you how many clients ask me, “How many press releases will you send out for me?” Some want us to flood the media with their message each month in the hope that their pitch will drive sales. They forget that the operative word in ‘news release’ is news.
In order to reach the consumer, you must first reach the editor who will decide whether or not to run your story. They are the gatekeepers. The disconnect for many clients new to PR is that they think distributing numerous press releases chock full of sales messages will get them the coverage they’re looking for. It is this fundamental misunderstanding of how it all works that leads to the failure of more PR campaigns than I can count.
